Storm users: stop your screen from rotating!

May 15, 2009 by Gregor Schiemann

A few days ago, two applications became available that stop the screen from automaticly tilting from landscape to portrait mode and vice versa. BB Storm users will agree, that this is a very helpful and important  feature that shold be built into the BlackBerry OS by default.

screenshot_2Mobireport – developers of Pimp My Pearl and Berry Locator – have created a lightweight application, calling it “Storm Rotation Wizard“. The key features are it’s small size (only 3K), no effect on battery life and simplicity in terms of usability. You can try this great application for free and purchase it later for $2,99.

screenshot_1The second application, “StopTilt“, developed by Ajani InfoTech is available for $2,99 til May 18, so you might wand to hurry up with the purchase, since it is going to cost $9,95 after that date. The author wrote: ”If you are tired of Storm auto rotating the orientation exactly when you don’t want it to, then this is the perfect solution for you. Lock It! Now you can use your Storm from the comfort of your bed without having to worry about orientation! Read your emails in portrait mode, or browse websites in landscape mode or whichever way you like!”

Both apps offer three modes of screen orientation; locked in landscape, locked in portrait and auto-rotate. You can manually adjust the screen mode for each built-in application nad many 3rd party apps. Both applications also require your OS to be updated to v4.7 or newer.

Bolt Browser update .83

February 8, 2009 by Jason Sconyers

bolt If you’ve been using the Bolt Browser and have been looking for some changes, well they’re here!

I have been playing around with this browser since the first beta was released. It is definitely a work in progress and looks very promising. One of the biggest issues I had with the original version was how bad the scrolling was. In .83, it doesn’t really appear to be fixed. Scrolling is still a pain, moving the cursor is so buggy it becomes aggravating. Another thing I did not like in .73 was the lack of the escape (back) key functionality. In Opera Mini, pressing the escape key, it would take you back to the last page you were on. In .83. They fixed this issue. It will take you back a page. However, unlike Opera Mini, it does not load the page from cache, it will reload the page again. This is a little time consuming. The pages render fast, so it really isn’t too bad. It is something I would like to see fixed in the next release. It has some new improvements which make this browser look even more promising. I am looking forward to the final release.

Here is a list of changes in the new release:
* APN configuration automated for BlackBerry devices. BOLT now auto-detects network details. This will eliminate the “internet not available” error messages, and manual APN configuration requirements, some BlackBerry users were experiencing.
* BlackBerry dedicated back key support. Also supported on some SE devices.
* BlackBerry scrolling enhancements. Scrolling on track ball BlackBerry devices is now faster and smoother.
* BlackBerry-specific enhancements to match BlackBerry system short cuts such as ”.” when space is pressed in URL mode.
* System fonts will be utilized instead of Bitstream fonts for lists and options, resulting in increased usability.
* Improved server support, resulting in a more stable browsing experience.
* Automatic reconnect after client/server disconnect
* Usability enhancements for URL, Favorites and History entry and management.
* Instant switching between landscape and portrait modes (this formerly required a server round trip). This should also enhance user experience on accelerometer powered devices such as the BlackBerry Storm.
* Auto-Update. When a new release is available, BOLT will prompt users to download and install the new release directly from BOLT.
* Blackberry Specific Scrolling/navigation enhancements including space to page down one screen and space+shift to page up one screen, ’t’ to jump to top of page, ‘b’ to jump to bottom.
* Double tap/double click as a shortcut to toggle between zoom out split screen mode, and full screen mode.

HedoneDesign Se7en theme

January 25, 2009 by Hedone Hawker
Filed under Theme News and Reviews, Themes

head-hd-se7en-9000New operating system theme for Bold, Curve, 88xx and 81xx is here! This time we took Windows Se7en and we did perfect replica of it! As you will see in description this is theme that (for the first time) includes some buttons that where not included in any theme out there. Also we prepared Expansion Pack for this theme with more backgrounds from famous new Operating System.

In our store you will be able to find screenshots, but in this post we will show you how this theme works and what are special futures we build in it.

ikonespodajdesno-hd-se7en-9000We should absolutely start with 3 buttons in lower right corner of theme. This are actually displays for battery and signal but they actually work!!! Also this three are buttons, which will be of great help in gaining access to certain features of your BlackBerry:
- The battery is at the same time, a button that lets you instant access to the settings of your phone,
- Signal display is a button that will open Options
- Profile is button that will open Profiles

Different phones have different features. Bold for example has a function “Today Plus” integrated, so when you highlight a single button displays events or new messages. In this way, you can display the nine events or messages with just highlighting an icon.

In all versions of this theme icons are made so that you can choose according to your wishes! In other words, icons are user customizable!

Versions for Curve, 88xx and Pearl are made in two options:
- Today Plus, which allows you to review messages and calendar on HomeScreen
- Zen, who has no messages or calendar on HomeScreen so that BackGround picture is in front.

It is also necessary to mention the SandClock as we called the icon, which tells you that your phone is working in the background. On the picture you see that it is also prepared to coincide with the theme.oscion

Expansion Pack is ready for all 4 types of Blackberries and the resolutions of these phones. Put wallpapers to the card of your phone and select the image you want for the background. Wallpapers in theme are made so that they can change!

As you are accustomed at HedoneDesign are all themes to the last pixel carefully designed. This can be expected in this one too!

Change your BlackBerry in one of latest operating systems out there!

IMPORTANT: Check Screenshots before you buy!!! Themes for different BlackBerries have different functions and does not look the same on all devices!

Bolt Browser for BlackBerry

January 20, 2009 by Jason Sconyers

boltHave you heard about the new mobile browser in the works? If not, listen up!

The Bolt browser is currently in the closed beta stage, however I was able to get my hands on a copy. I have been playing around with it for about a day and for the most part, I am pretty impressed. I have been testing this on a BlackBerry 8830. The browser will work on all Java-based phones, not just BlackBerry devices. According to their website, devices operating on Palm OS are not supported.

After installing and rebooting the phone, you will notice a new icon on your home screen.  Opening the browser will take you to the application’s homepage.  The first thing you will notice is how the homepage is organized. There are three tabs, a history tab, a favorites tab, and a feeds tab.  Above the tabs you will notice the address bar.  Scrolling is controlled by the trackball, as you would imagine.  To me, scrolling seems a little buggy, it seems slow to scroll horizontally. It also seems kind of jumpy. You can also navigate using the 2 (up), 4 (left), 6 (right), and 8 (down) keys.

When you enter the initial address from the home screen, you will be prompted to allow the connection. The same way Opera Mini does, if you’re familiar with that. I was amazed by how fast the pages render.  The pages show on your device just how they would on a PC when in Desktop View.  The Bolt browser also has a Mobile View.  This will fit the page to the width of the screen, removing horizontal scrolling.

One feature I do like about the Bolt browser is the Split-Screen feature while in Desktop View. You can get to the Split-Screen mode my pressing the menu key and selecting it, or by pressing the 5 key. Split-Screen mode shows a miniature version of the entire page with a magnifying box at the top half of the screen. The bottom half of the screen shows the zoomed in portion of the page that the box is highlighting.

This browser is pretty comparable to Opera Mini in a lot of categories, such as page rendering, and speed.  Another likeness it has to Opera Mini is the fact that you have to select a text box to input text. This can make it difficult if you’re at a site that requires captcha. You can’t just highlight the text box with the cursor and begin typing like you can in the BlackBerry browser.  I am used to this with Opera Mini, so it’s not a deal breaker for me. Like the Opera Mini browser, for downloads it will launch the BlackBerry browser. When it launches the BlackBerry browser, the Bolt browser will remain running in the background, therefore, you never lose the site you were visiting. My biggest pet peeve about Opera Mini is found in the Bolt browser as well, the inability to select and copy text.

Overall, for it’s initial beta release, it is very impressive. It is pretty comparable to Opera Mini. It appears to be a pretty stable and solid browser.  I am hoping to see some changes before it is officially released. I would like to see smoother scrolling, and the ability to copy text from a web page. I know it is a long shot, but I would like to see tabbed browsing added.  This is a very promising mobile browser.

Check their Web page at www.boltbrowser.com for more information.
