BlackBerry smartphones still on top of Mobile Security Report
May 28, 2009 by Gregor Schiemann
Maribel Lopez, former researcher at Forrester Research, recently published a report about security of various mobile devices. RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones again topped the list, ahead of Apple’s iPhone, Windows Mobile devices and more.

According to the report, BlackBerry devices are the most secure, when it comes to protecting your data from unauthorized access. Furthermore, BBs scored in all four sections, whereas iPhone and Windows Mobile failed in one section of the test each. That’s soothing news for us, especially since a lot of people choose BBs to handle sensitive data (both for business and private use). If you’re interested, you can read the full article here.

RIM not dropping SurePress yet

More news about the Storm 2’s screen: RIM’s Founder and Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis was the guest at D7 and told the host Walt Mossberg, that “SurePress is here to stay”. As seen in some leaked pictures, the screen of the yet-to-be-released Storm 2 looks firmly built-in, so we are curious to see what RIM have come up with. Some rumors suggest an enhanced version of the haptic sreen (TruePress), so we will have to wait and see what’s what.

US Cellular now offering free Battery Swap Program
May 19, 2009 by Gregor Schiemann

US Cellular is offering a new and completely free service for BlackBerry users. If your blackberry is less than 18 months old and you are runing out of battery power, you can simply walk into any US Cellular branch and have your dead (or dying) battery replaced for a fully charged one. Here is what they had to say about their new offer:
“Our Battery Swap program is perfect for people who depend on their wireless devices as their lifelines, such as business people, parents, not to mention heavy users who drain their battery daily,” said Jay Ellison, executive vice president and COO of U.S. Cellular. “We’re offering this service to help our customers stay connected.”
Hopefully, other operators are soon going to follow this lead. If you’re not with US Cellular, or your BB is older than 18 moths, your best way to stay connected is to buy a reserve battery.

Anagram: Free contact manager for BlackBerry devices
May 17, 2009 by Gregor Schiemann
Anagram is a tiny program, that enables adding contact information to your phonebook from any text you receive. Let’s say you get an email from a business partner. All the information you need (telephone number, fax, company, adress…) are written in the signature. Instead of manually copying all the relevant data, you can have Anagram do that for you. After the data is extracted from the e-mail, the application lets you review, edit and save the data you want. But the best part about this little tool- it’s absolutely fee!
You can download Anagram here.

News about upcoming BlackBerry models
May 17, 2009 by Gregor Schiemann
Lately, there are a lot of news and rumors on the internet about the new BlackBerry models. Since it’s easy to loose focus with all the various information and sources, i put all the latest info in this post.
The BlackBerry 9630 was long known as the “Niagara”, however a while ago the name was changed to “Tour”. The BB Tour is probably the most talked-about model RIM is about to release. Tons of articles are available on the internet about it’s new features and functions. The Tour will be CDMA/EV-DO capable, have a 480×320 pixels display, a 3.2 MP camera and built-in GPS. When news about the BlackBerry 9620 started leaking, it was stated that this model will also have Wi-Fi. Apparently, RIM are about to release another model around the same time as the Tour, code-naming it the Atlas. Very few information about this model is available today (could be a HSDPA/3G Bold), but all the latest hints and leaks state the Atlas to have Wi-Fi, not the Tour. The unofficial release date of the BlackBerry 9630 is said to be July 13th, however this has not yet been confirmed.
We already wrote an article about the new BlackBerry Storm 2. Well, we got some more news. People, who have actually seen and handled the new Storm say, that the touchscreen on the new model doesen’t press in. RIM replaced the SurePress screen with a stationary, iPhone-like one. This is good news since there’s no chance for dust to come under your screen, but somehow leaves RIM without their selling-advantage. The leaked models are said to have an option to enable some type of haptic feedback, so the rumors about a new TruePress technology might be true.
You probably already read about the soon-to-be-released BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230. According to some rumors, the release date could be as soon as May or maybe June. The 8230 is a EV-DO phone, so still no 3G for Pearl users. It has a 2.0 MP camera, 128 MB built-in memory, microSD slot (expandable up to 16GB) and battery times up to 220 min usage or 216 hrs stand-by.

The new device looks very much like the old one, except for the buttons at the lower part of the screen. They appear to be integrated into the display and are most likely touch-sensitive. The most destinctive changes are Wi-Fi connectability and “among other things a new manner to input text” sais a RIM sales manager. According to rumors circulating the internet the new Storm is to launch this September.

Storm users: stop your screen from rotating!
May 15, 2009 by Gregor Schiemann
A few days ago, two applications became available that stop the screen from automaticly tilting from landscape to portrait mode and vice versa. BB Storm users will agree, that this is a very helpful and important feature that shold be built into the BlackBerry OS by default.
Mobireport – developers of Pimp My Pearl and Berry Locator – have created a lightweight application, calling it “Storm Rotation Wizard“. The key features are it’s small size (only 3K), no effect on battery life and simplicity in terms of usability. You can try this great application for free and purchase it later for $2,99.
The second application, “StopTilt“, developed by Ajani InfoTech is available for $2,99 til May 18, so you might wand to hurry up with the purchase, since it is going to cost $9,95 after that date. The author wrote: ”If you are tired of Storm auto rotating the orientation exactly when you don’t want it to, then this is the perfect solution for you. Lock It! Now you can use your Storm from the comfort of your bed without having to worry about orientation! Read your emails in portrait mode, or browse websites in landscape mode or whichever way you like!”
Both apps offer three modes of screen orientation; locked in landscape, locked in portrait and auto-rotate. You can manually adjust the screen mode for each built-in application nad many 3rd party apps. Both applications also require your OS to be updated to v4.7 or newer.
